Doctors — Martin Ashley
I qualified from Westminster Hospital, London in 1978. Initially I was interested in a career in Intensive Care and spent the early part of my training doing jobs relating to anaesthetics; although these might not at first sight have an obvious link into general practice, I have found many of the insights gained to be valuable (e.g. ENT and plastic surgery). Although I only joined Minster Health in 2001, I have worked as a GP based at Monkgate Health Centre in York since 1988.
My medical interests include respiratory problems, minor surgery, male sexual dysfunction and drug addiction.
Outside medicine I have a particular interest in education and have been a GP trainer ( teaching young doctors specialising in general practice) for over 10 years, as well as acting as a supervisor to new GP trainers in the York region. I also am one of the team of GP appraisers for SYPCT.
My latest project was to become a tutor to Nurse Practitioners at both Leeds Metropolitan and Huddersfield Universities.
I work actively in the field of drug addiction, where I am a qualified GP with special interest.(GPwSI) in the Compass drug Addiction Service based in Selby
I am also involved in teaching the skills needed for this particular discipline to other doctors, nurses and pharmacists, lecturing on the special diploma course run by the Royal College of General Practitioners in London.
I travel to London on a monthly basis to attend the ‘claims committee’ of the Medical Protection Society where I act as an expert witness for the society – but only in the topics relating to General Practice!
I am married to a local GP and have two grown up children. My outside interests are most forms of sport including the gym, golf and tennis.
